Aspire More Able: Science Multipack 2 -PowerPoint
Presentations CD is a superbly presented package. As the name suggests it
is aimed at more able pupils but I believe would be useful with other
ability levels. The package consists of excellent PowerPoint presentations
including animations, full lesson plans, details of demonstrations and
practicals, information for analysis and worksheets. Topics covered in this
multi-pack are Genetics, Heat Transfer, Electrochemistry, Haber Process and
a Caving Conundrum to develop an awareness of chemistry and its uses to
solve problems.
Each topic is designed to teach the pupils to explore ideas and think
whilst learning syllabus content and extends the pupils by encouraging them
to solve problems in structured steps, to process information, to reason,
to be creative in their thinking, to use modelling skills, to use a high
level of language in explanation and to co-operate with others to develop
ideas and to evaluate their work rather than by accelerated content
coverage. This develops the skills required for SC1 coursework and forms a
basis for learning at A level and beyond.
The product is aimed at class use with the teacher as a facilitator guiding
the class through the sections of the lesson. For each topic the following
are provided: lesson structure with timings, teacher guide including
objectives and National Curriculum references, equipment lists for
practicals and demonstrations, pupil sheets and answer sheets. This means
the package can be used with little effort by the teacher saving time and
effort in planning. Assessment is built in via homeworks or individual
tasks.
For more able pupils this would be an invaluable tool to extend the pupils
by encouraging learning of concepts through thinking and deduction rather
than by rote. This ensures a better depth of understanding and an extension
of cross curricular skills. For other pupils many aspects of the lessons
would be applicable with additional input from the teacher and many
sections of the PowerPoint Slides and animations could also be used with
Special Needs Pupils. The initial impression as you open the package is
good and this is built on as you delve further into the product.
